Camping

Camping along Pearl Pass is an unforgettable experience, with plenty of quiet spots to set up for the night as you wind through mountains and meadows. Some travelers like to pitch tents just beyond the “airport” near Crested Butte, while others choose to grab a high-alpine clearing at around 10,000 feet for incredible sunset views and low light pollution that reveals a crystal-clear Milky Way. If you’re planning a multi-day loop, it’s easy to combine nearby passes and break up the more challenging portions of the route by sleeping under the stars—just keep in mind that parking areas can be narrow, so smaller groups find it easier to snag prime campsites.
